Coast region’s Harunani sets records at Oshwal swimming pool

What you need to know:

  • Harunani started the day by setting a new 50m butterfly boys’ record when he clocked 28.17 seconds, breaking the old time of 29.60 set by Karrjal Shah in 1995.
  • Another record came in girls’ 50m backstroke through Kelly Aprobus of Metropolitan who returned 26.20, shattering Stig Njiru’s old time of 37.76.
    Aprobus’s teammate, Marina Rozanfki, also set a new mark of  1:04.89 in girls’ 100m freestyle.

Sixteen-year-old Saahil Harunani of Coast region set two new records in 50 and 100 meters butterfly events during the secondary schools Term One games at Oshwal Academy swimming pool.

Harunani started the day by setting a new 50m butterfly boys’ record when he clocked 28.17 seconds, breaking the old time of 29.60 set by Karrjal Shah in 1995.

Harunani went on to set a new mark of of 1:04.56 in 100m butterfly, erasing the old time of 1:05.11 held by Patel Chirag since 2012 in Kisumu.

In girls’ category, Emily Muteti of Coast region set three records in 200m individual medley when she returned 2:40.45. The previous record of 2:53.43 belonged to  Nawab Rhea since 2012.

Muteti went on to set a new mark in 50m butterfly in 33.16, erasing Diana Josiah’s time of 34.47. The Mombasa swimmer also broke the 100m butterfly record, clocking 1:18.52 to erase the old record of 1:09.59 held by Donde Debbze.

Another record came in girls’ 50m backstroke through Kelly Aprobus of Metropolitan who returned 26.20, shattering Stig Njiru’s old time of 37.76.
Aprobus’s teammate, Marina Rozanfki, also set a new mark of  1:04.89 in girls’ 100m freestyle.

Gouri Kotecha set the old record of 1.05.67 in 2012.
