Students bag third win in league at Nyayo while World Hope arrest Pirates

Strathmore University on Saturday registered their third victory in the first leg of women’s basketball Premier League when they defeated Gladiators 49-27 at the Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

Co-operative Bank women’s team also beat Mennonites 57-20 as World Hope escaped with a narrow 60-59 win over Kenyatta University’s Pirates while Emyba beat Upper Hill School 66-63 on a busy day. In Kakamega, women’s defending champions Eagle Wings whitewashed hosts Western Delight 64-25.

On Sunday, men’s champions Co-op Bank beat Ulinzi Warriors 89-72, Blazers shocked University of Nairobi’s Terrorists 46-45, while Parklands Baptist edged out Kenya Airports Authority 59-58. Sunday’s other matches also saw Umoja bag two points with a slim 57-55 win over Terrorists.

Nairobi Aviation won 69-42 against Kenya College of Accountancy as Pirates recovered to beat African Nazarene university 108-49.

Strathmore dominate

Grace Wanjiku and Tanya Ogwel scored quick three-pointers which saw Strathmore race to a 14-2 first-quarter lead against Gladiators. Gladiators, who lost their seventh consecutive match, trailed 27-6 at half-time.

Upon resumption, the students raced to a 9-6 lead but Gladiators, chasing their first win, recovered to lead 15-13 in the fourth quarter but this was not enough to erase the huge margin.

Ogwel scored 11 points while Wanjiru contributed seven in Strathmore’s win, which took them from eighth to seventh place with nine points. Gladiators remain bottom on the standings with six points after losing all their six first leg matches.
