Move to Leopards at your peril Ouma

What you need to know:

  • I don’t know if you ever heard of him but one of the best players ever to strut his stuff on the Kenyan football scene was the late John Okello “Zangi”.

  • Remember also Eric Masika. In his heyday, Masika was the darling of Gor fans. I am sure you have heard what became of him.

  • Then there was Timona Wannyonyi who left Gor only to be an utter flop at the Den.

Dear Eric “Marcelo” Ouma. Kindly allow me to talk to you today.

I know we have never met but please rest assured that this is done with utmost sincerity.

From what is in the public domain and in the blogosphere, it is said that you feel unsettled at Gor Mahia and that you are seeking to bolt away to AFC Leopards.

That, my dear friend is within your right.

The constitution of Kenya allows the right to association and assembly and were you to leave Gor Mahia you would be breaking no law.

However, let me take you on a short journey through history.

I don’t know if you ever heard of him but one of the best players ever to strut his stuff on the Kenyan football scene was the late John Okello “Zangi”.

I know he holds the record as the youngest player ever to play for the national team Harambee Stars.

Then the unimaginable happened. K’Ogalo played against AFC Leopards and Ingwe beat Gor 3-2 in what was clearly a fixed match.

Gor had taken a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time, thanks to goals from the late Sammy Onyango Jogoo and were seemingly on cruise control.

In the fallout that ensued, it was alleged that AFC chairman, the deep pocketed Alfred Wekesa Sambu “Abiola” had influenced the match.

Zangi crossed over and joined the Den with the adoring Ingwe fans giving him the name of Wanyonyi.

He was a failure and Zangi, a player who had been linked with Italian giants AS Roma flopped at AFC.

The last days of his life he was reduced to a Gor supporter and I remember singing with him on the Russia terraces together with the late Apingo Nyawawa, Okello MacOchuodho and Dod Kenyatta.

Remember also Eric Masika. In his heyday, Masika was the darling of Gor fans. I am sure you have heard what became of him.

Then there was Timona Wannyonyi who left Gor only to be an utter flop at the Den.

Marcelo, nobody in his right mind would leave Gor  to head to that miserable looking team called AFC Leopards.

At Gor Mahia you have a chance of playing in Cecafa next month and a chance of showcasing your talent on the continent.

This is because at Gor as my young friend and Gor Mahia fan Seth Marcus says, we have a realistic stab at winning the league this year.

So my dear friend, the choice is yours — either you stick with Gor and make a name for yourself or cross over to AFC Leopards where I can assure you two years from now you will be just another obscure player.

Do not say I did not warn you.
