With a new coach, the league is Gor’s for the taking

What you need to know:

  • I was smiling all the while because Gor Mahia had just drawn with KCB; which might make you wonder why I would celebrate a draw. But being someone who has been around K’Ogalo for many years, I had many reasons for rejoicing. It was the first game that Gor Mahia was playing under Frank Ouna as the acting coach. I have never known Frank but the result suited him just fine.
  • At the beginning of the just ended 2014 World Cup, I was part of a radio show on Nation FM. On the first day of the tournament we took a bet with my fellow panelists in the studio comprising show hosts Angela Angwenyi and Lorna Irungu.

It was one great weekend. A weekend in which Gor Mahia maintained top spot in the league table. A weekend Gor Mahia got a new British coach!

The weekend that I finally managed to meet a nice old lady who follows all world leagues. And of course the weekend that I saw those nice looking women of AFC Leopards dumped right where they belong – into a police truck.

It started like this. At the beginning of the just ended 2014 World Cup, I was part of a radio show on Nation FM. On the first day of the tournament we took a bet with my fellow panellists in the studio comprising show hosts Angela Angwenyi and Lorna Irungu.

In that team there were also the businesslike minds of Auka Gecheo, the regional General Manager of SuperSport, Herbert Mwachiro and Manwa Magoma, the head of radio at Nation FM.

Now, good old Angela throws the balloon in the air; that somebody must call and predict who the winner of the World Cup would be. We all got our predictions wrong apart from Lorna’s mum who correctly placed her bet on Germany. So, finally we had to honour our debts and invite the old lady for lunch. And then she wowed all of us with her insightful knowledge of the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga and the Italian Serie A – since 30 years ago!

I was smiling all the while because Gor Mahia had just drawn with KCB; which might make you wonder why I would celebrate a draw. But being someone who has been around K’Ogalo for many years, I had many reasons for rejoicing. It was the first game that Gor Mahia was playing under Frank Ouna as the acting coach. He may not be the best coach but around but it will look very nice on his CV to mention his coaching role at the best team in Kenya. Under the circumstances, a draw is not such a bad deal.

About our new coach? All that I can tell you for now is that he is a Briton. History has proved that Gor Mahia goes along well with British coaches.

So thus went a weekend that I met all the good people in Kenya. But I would be failing in my duty if I don’t mention that I also met my old pal Tim Njiru, a staunch K’Ogalo fan who was trying to teach some Luo men and women the a particular song by the late Okatch Biggy Agutu Nyowila. This league is ours to lose!
