Top drivers enter inaugural Rift 1000 Classic Rally

Ian Duncan, the former Safari Rally winner is among the list of drivers preparing to tackle the Rift 1000 Classic Rally in December. He is expected to drive his familiar Ford Capri.

Duncan, who has previously been associated with the East African Safari Classic Rally, having won the event several times, will headline a strong entry list for the inaugural round of the marathon event to be organized by the Rift Valley Motor Sports Club.

While Classic events have always been associated with the East African Safari Classic Rally in the recent past, Nakuru Club becomes the first institution to follow a similar pattern with its event in the second week of December.

FAMOUS DRIVER

Frank Tundo, one of the most famous rally drivers in the country, has taken up the job of organizing this unique event under the umbrella of Menengai Oil as the main sponsors.

“It is a great support coming from Menengai Oil for the inaugural event. My idea is to give a chance to those with the Classic Cars to come and enjoy a compact rally with a budget that is affordable for many,” said Tundo.

The event will run from December 10 to 12. It will cover areas around Baringo and Elgeiyo Marakwet counties with a total distance of 1,000kms. Other leading names include Carl Tundo in a Triumph 7, Geoff Bell from South Africa in a Datsun 240Z, Alastair Cavenagh (Porsche 911), Jim Heather-Hayes (Mercedes 450SL) among others.

Yvonne Mehta, the wife of the late Shekhar Mehta has entered as navigator to Tundo in a Triumph 7 also.

Tundo added: “The intention is to run 300 competitive kilometres per day. We have received maximum entries with special cars from the old days ready to race.”
