Watamu Triathlon championship is on

More than 100 athletes, among them Commonwealth Games and Africa Youth Games hopefuls, will battle it out at the Watamu Triathlon championship this weekend.

The championship, which will be the first Pan-African triathlon event, will feature Olympic distances of 1.5km swim, 40km of biking and 10km run.

Among the athletes who will use the championship to prepare for the Commonwealth Games and Africa Youth Games trials are Taher Pirbhai, Suhail Ameeerali and Mohammed Tarmal.

One of the organisers, Francis Mutuku, said that those to watch in the women’s competition are Caroline Mutheu Kameta, Sharifa Ingosi and Priscah Maoga among others in the two days event. International Swaleh Balala, who has represented Kenya at the All African Games, will however miss the event since he is in Egypt for an international race this weekend.

Balala is among the local favourites to claim a place in Kenya’s Triathlon team for the Commonwealth Games due July 23 to August 3.  Kenya’s Triathlon team will debut at the Games. The Africa Youth Games are due May 22 to 31 in Gaborone, Botswana.

Mutuku said the race has also attracted individual entrants from Canada, US, United Kingdom and Italy.

The championship also aims at collecting funds to support community sports activities and to empower individuals economically.
