Jamhuri’s Cleophas Rop and individual entrant Eunice Kiprop chalked standout performances to win the Kenya Prisons Nairobi Provincial Cross Country men’s and women’s races on Saturday.

Taking advantage of the cool but sunny morning weather, the 28-year-old Rop went for the kill with two laps remaining.

He tactically broke away from Daniel Too of Nairobi West to triumph in 37 minutes 42.07 seconds.

The lanky Kiprop, 20, claimed her maiden cross country title when she took over the women’s race lead from Caroline Jelagat after four kilometres to win stopping the clock at 32 minutes and 35.13 seconds.

Jelagat came home second in 32:53.8 with former 800m international Annet Mwania settling third 33:44.3.

“It was a good race and I hope to perform well in future races this being my first,” said Kiprop as Jelagat, 32 blamed her defeat on stitches.
