Seaman Mkalla runs away with 1,500m title

Kenya Navy’s David Mkalla took 3:50.8 to win the 1,500 metres race during the Mombasa District athletics championships at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium on Saturday.

Mkala was followed closely by an individual runner, Martin Kinyua, who returned 3:53.8 with Mutuku Nzolo of Municipal Council of Mombasa (MCM) team finished third in a time of 4:11.3.

KPA’s Athman Mohamed won the 10,000m walk event when he clocked 59:24.0, Gabriel Mwangi of NYS taking second position in 2:33.0 as Paul Kamau also of NYS claiming third spot in 2:34.0.

Another NYS athlete, Robert Chacha emerged the winner in the 400m hurdles by returning 59.50, Patrick Onchiri and MCM’s Daniel Katana finishing second and third, timing 63.44 and 65.27 respectively.

In the women category, Gladys Mutisya of MCM won the 1,500m event after clocking 5:08.9, followed by Emmaculate Mutua of NYS who returned 5:10.7.

They were the only women competitors in the event. Dallas’ Happiness Moses clocked 13.9 to win the 100m, Lydia Chacha of MCM was second (14.4) while KPA’s Jelda Omeka, third (14.8).

Happiness also emerged the winner in the 400m hurdles event when she took 78.9, Naomi Munene of Mombasa Polytechnic, second (85.6) and Tawhida A of MCM, third (92.2).
