Team Kenya’s preparations for the World Under-18 Championships got a major boost on Friday when the Local Organising Committee (LOC) donated equipment worth Sh2 million to their course.

And there was more good news when Chief Executive Officer of the LOC, Mwangi Muthee, disclosed that it will fund all Team Kenya training camps for the youth competition due July 12-16 at the Safaricom Stadium.

Muthee disclosed that one of the LOC’s responsibilities is to support Team Kenya, adding that they will ensure Kenya has strong entries across the board in the championship.

“This is our event but we really must ensure that Kenya is strongly represented in all the events. That is why other than donating equipment, we shall support matters regarding logistics and hospitality in Team Kenya’s training camp,” said Muthee.

“The youth will need conducive environment for preparations.”

Muthee was speaking at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani where he presented the equipment to Athletics Kenya officials. Also present were World javelin champion Julius Yego and World Under-18 and Under-20 steeplechase champion Cellphine Chespol.

Muthee noted that the world will not only be interested in knowing what kind of event Kenya will host but also the quality of local teams that will compete. He said Germany has offered to send a coach to train Kenyan youth in field events, especially the throws.

Athletics Kenya Youth and Development committee chairman Barnaba Korir said Kenya’s youth teams have been training in 12 camps since August last year in readiness for selection.
