Wario imposes media blackout on Rio team over negative coverage

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario on Thursday enforced a media blackout on the Kenyan team in the Rio Olympics to curb negative coverage.

In a tweet sent out on Tuesday morning to the Ministry of Sports account, Dr Wario said he had "cut communication between Kenyan athletes and foreign media after several leaks targeting the Kenyan team."

On Sunday, Dr Wario sent home Kenya's athletics team manager in Rio de Janeiro, Maj (rtd) Michael Rotich, after revelations of doping allegations against him.

Speaking to the Nation on Sunday at the Olympic Village, Dr Wario also said that once the official gets back home he would be required to provide investigators with any information that he may have.

Rotich’s ejection of Maj Rotich followed reports in British paper the Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD that he allegedly offered to warn undercover British journalists posing as coaches of impending drugs tests in exchange for money.
