Caleb Mwangangi is Kenya’s best in sports

The 2014 Sports Personality of the Year, Caleb Mwangangi said the best is yet to come from him as he dedicated his victory to his late training partner, Peter Matheka.
The 22-year-old, who also won the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year-Male Award, thanked his coaches Paul Mutwii and Renato and fans for the support they gave him throughout the year 2014. Matheka, the 2010 World Youth Olympics 2,000m steeplechase chase champion, passed on in a car accident on July 10, last year aged 20.
The Machakos-born Mwangangi, who shifted from 1,500m to 3,000m and 5,000, had a stellar 2014, winning five major titles including the Diamond League Series.
Mwangangi glided to the World Indoor 3,000m victory 7:54.94 in Poland in March before going for the Commonwealth Games 5,000m gold medal clocking 13:12.07 Glasgow, Scotland in July.
He won the Africa 5,000m title 13:34.27 in Marrakech, Morocco in August that qualified him for the Continental Cup (World Cup) where he struck 3,000m gold in 7:52.64 at the same venue in September.

Eunice Sum, the Commonwealth Games, Africa and World Cup 800m champion, won Sports Personality of the Year-Female award beating Commonwealth Games 5,000m champion Mercy Cherono and Commonwealth 1,500m champion Faith Chepng’etich.
