World 800m record holder David Rudisha is not ready to compete at high profile events like the First Athletics Kenya Relay Series and Sprints that starts on Friday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The four-leg series will culminate with the National Relays trials where a team will be selected for the inaugural IAAF World Relays Championships due on May 25 to 25 in Nassau, Bahamas.

Kenya hopes to field athletes in six finals on the last day – 4x400m (women), 4x1,500m (men), 4x800m (women), 4x400m (men), 4x200m (women) and 4x100m (men).

Rudisha’s coach Colm O’Connell indicated that his athlete has resumed training in Iten, having recovered from a knee injury that he sustained in July last year, and he will be back in competitive action within six weeks.

O’Connell said the 25-year-old from Kilgoris, who is among 18 athletes shortlisted to form the 800m, is likely to start competing at the Third AK Track and Field Meeting on April 11-12 in Kisii.

Rudisha produced one of the best performances at London 2012 Olympics where he, not only won gold in the two-lap race, but also bettered his own world record time to 1:40.91.

“Rudisha is not ready yet and still recovering. He has begun basic foundation training and he is not in shape for a high profiled competition,” said O’Connell adding that his progress might be slow.
