Former winners to race in Total Economy Run

What you need to know:

  • Sati Gata-Aura, a former winner in the CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance, will also line up in the race, carrying number six on his 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV.
  • Chandaria is capable of achieving the best fuel consumption and winning the top prize. Amon Hajula, a senior technician at Car and General, won the 2010 Total Quartz Economy Run in a two-litre Alfa Romeo 164.

Four previous winners are among contestants who will line up for today’s Total Quartz Economy Run.

Defending champion Mike Anderson will be the third to start the competition at the Total ABC Waiyaki Way Service Station in Nairobi at 9am.

The other former winners who will compete in the event organised by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club are Shailesh Chandaria and Amon Hajula.

The first prize will go to the driver who covers the 84km route between Nairobi and the Total Njabini Service Station in the centre of Naivasha town in the set time using the lowest amount of petrol.

The objective of the Total Economy Run is to demonstrate energy savings which can be achieved by careful driving within the speed limits.

In 2009, Shailesh Chandaria caused an upset in his 1984 carburettor engine Alfa Giulietta, beating several drivers with the latest fuel-injected Alfa models.

Chandaria is capable of achieving the best fuel consumption and winning the top prize. Amon Hajula, a senior technician at Car and General, won the 2010 Total Quartz Economy Run in a two-litre Alfa Romeo 164.

Today, he will be flagged off seventh from the Total ABC Service Station in a 1994 Alfa Romeo 155.

Vice chairman of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club Peter Wanday will compete in the event for the second time in his 1972 Alfa GTV 2000.

He will be up against his wife Kamene and daughter Joy who are the only ladies crew. Kamene and Joy have been drawn second and will compete in an Alfa Romeo 155. Other competitors are Micky Bassi (1989 Alfa 75), Kuki Mahajan (2002 Alfa 147) and Shiv Ageda (1974 Alfetta).
