Kenya struck gold and bronze medals in the girls’ 2,000 metres steeplechase on Sunday as the curtains came down on the seventh IAAF World Youth Championships here.
Africa Cross Country great Norah Jeruto and Lilian Chemweno anchored Kenya from the fourth position to second in an afternoon of high drama at the Lille Metropole Stadium.
The two girls strolled to victory as their main rivals, Ethiopia, fell outside the medal bracket.
Jeruto raced to victory 6 minutes 16.41 seconds, followed in second place by Morocco’s Fadwa Sidi Madane (6:20.98) as Chemweno (6:21.85) settled for bronze.
Jeruto said after the race. “At least I have accomplished my dream here. I will now focus ahead.”
