Jelagat in bright start to track and field season

  • Jelagat from Kenya Prisons beat former national youth 200m champion Maureen Thomas (57.0). Emily Cherotich of Kenya Police was third in 57.4.
  • It was Jelagat’s first race since representing Kenya at the World Championships in Beijing August last year. 
  • Jelagat, who has already qualified for the Rio Olympic Games due August, reached the semi-finals at Beijing on her second appearance at the World Championships.

National champion Maureen Jelagat won 400 metres race in 55.6 seconds in the opening leg of the Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meet at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University in Bondo at the weekend.

Jelagat from Kenya Prisons beat former national youth 200m champion Maureen Thomas (57.0). Emily Cherotich of Kenya Police was third in 57.4.

It was Jelagat’s first race since representing Kenya at the World Championships in Beijing August last year. 

Jelagat, who has already qualified for the Rio Olympic Games due August, reached the semi-finals at Beijing on her second appearance at the World Championships.

Emily Cherotich (Police), who has represented Kenya in several international races, won women’s 800m race in 2:07:6, beating Betty Chepkemoi 2:10.8 and Mary Malika 2:12.3. Malika atoned for her defeat with victory in 1,500m in 4:30.0.
