Double track champion Emmanuel Kipsang burst into a blistering pace early to easily win the men’s 10km race during the Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country Championships in Nyahururu on Friday.

In the women’s race, the 2005 Marrakech World Youth 1,500 gold medallist Sheila Chepkirui broke from the pack and won the race in in 35:24.8.

Kipsang shot to the front soon after the first lap in the men’s race during the 36th edition of the championships held at an open ground neighbouring the Nyahururu Golf Club, and went on to open an unassailable gap. He won in a time of 30:14.7.

“I knew I didn’t have the finishing power, so I had to take the lead early to be in a safe position,” said Kipsang after the race.

KERING WAS SECOND

Hilary Kering was second with 30.26.5 ahead of winner of the Machakos leg of the Athletics Kenya Cross Country series Steve Arita, who returned 30:37.5 and Geoffrey Kirui who posted 30:43.2.

In the women’s 10km race, former world junior 3,000m champion Veronica Nyaruai was second with 35:37.8 and World Indoor 1,500m champion Hellen Obiri came third with a time of 35:40.4.

“I want to compete in the Africa Championships and the Rio Olympics,” said Chepkirui.
