Kenyan juniors make strong start in championship

Kenya on Friday made a strong start, winning three gold medals and two silver as the East and Central Africa Junior Athletics Championships got underway at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Kevin Tonui got his team mates off to the best start possible with victory in boys’ 400 metres race before World Youth 2,000m steeplechase silver medallist Sandra Chebet went for the women’s 5,000m title.

Bethwell Kibet then wrapped up the day with what was the icing on the cake when he won men’s triple jump.

Tonui eased home in the men’s one-lap race in 46.26 seconds, beating fellow countryman Ronald Afya to second in 47.51 as Uganda’s Samuel Oweka settled for bronze in 47.52.

Kenya went for a 1-2 feat in women’s 5,000m when Chebet took 16:15.80 to triumph followed by Emmaculate Chepkirui in 16:26.97. Uganda’s Mercile Chelagat returned third in 16:29.56 for bronze.

Kibet scaled 7m and 47 cm to win in triple jump, beating Elsid Yasir from Sudan and Tanzanian Benjamin Michael in 6.72 and 6.17 respectively.
