Kenyans eye Amsterdam Marathon title

- In the women’s race, Hamburg Marathon bronze medallist Viola Kibiwott and Gladys Chesir will flying Kenya’s flag.
Seoul Marathon champion Amos Kipruto, debutante Edwin Kiptoo, former Amsterdam Marathon champion Wilson Chebet and Laban Korir will lead Kenya’s charge at Sunday’s Amsterdam Marathon, seeking to retain the title won last year by Daniel Wanjiru.
Wanjiru, who is also the London Marathon champion, won last year’s race in a course record two hours, five minutes and 21 seconds. They will be up against 25-year-old Ethiopian Tsefaye Abera, the fastest on the elite list with 2:04:24.
Kipruto has been training in Kapsabet, Nandi County.
“My training went on well and I will be looking forward to a good run. I want to run my race and be on the podium and if all goes well, I want to win,” he told Nation Sport before leaving for Amsterdam on Tuesday evening.
Kipruto lowered his personal best to 2:05:54 in winning this year’s Seoul Marathon title and is now eyeing Wanjiru’s Amsterdam course record.
