Large field expected at Eldoret cross country

More than 1,500 athletes are expected to participate in the 27th edition of the University of Eldoret Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Uasin Gishu County.

Many athletes will be using the event as a build-up for the Athletics Kenya cross country season proper that begins next month. The season did start last week with a brilliant show from Isaiah Kiplagat in the Memorial Ndalat Gaa Cross Country championships that attracted more than 3,000 athletes.

According to the Local Organising Committee for the University of Eldoret cross, Kibet Rono, they are not surprise with the overwhelming interest from athletes and they expected some tough battles in the races.

Last years’ winner in the men and women’s senior category Philip Kibungei and Pascalia Jepkorir respectively are expected to defend their titles.

Sandra Chebet, who the Ndalat Gaa last week, is also expected try her luck in Eldoret. There will also be 10km and 8km races for University students’ men and women while kids will take part in the 1km races for different age groups. A 2km run for senior citizens is also in the programme.

Julius Kirwa, who was the Team Kenya head coach to the World Championships in London, urged all track athletes to use the cross country series as a build-up for the new season.

“I want to urge all athletes especially those eyeing track competitions to participate in the cross country events as build-up since the Commonwealth Games trials are just around the corner,” said Kirwa.

"We need a strong team to the games because other countries are busy training to beat Kenya.”
