Emmanuel Bor from Nandi County led from gun to tape to win the third edition of Discovery Nyahururu 10km Road Race men’s event held on Sunday.

The women race was won by Beatrice Chepkemoi who is in fine form that has seen her carry several races in recent times.

Bor, from Hussein Training camp which is among the oldest athletics training camps in the country, did not face serious challenge and cruised all the way to win in 28:25.8. The win was a confidence booster as he dreams of being in the national team to the World Cross Country championships in Aarhus, Denmark next month.

“If I get a slot during the Central Rift Regional Cross country championships, I will be certain of going to the World Cross,” said Bor who is also the Nandi County Cross Country champion. He finished 9th in last week’s 28th edition of Discovery Cross Country in Eldoret.

Bor, the son of former Javelin thrower Eric Kibor, was a member of the team that represented Kenya at the African Cross Country in Algiers last year and finished fifth. That was the last competitive outing outside the country for the purring runner.

During the Nyahururu race, held in memory of the late Samuel Kamau Wanjiru who won Kenya first marathon gold, Charles Kamau from Uasin Gishu was second in 28:37.2 ahead of Nyahururu’s Simon Saidimu, 28:42.0.

The race, held on a sunny windless day, started at Mairo Inya on the Nyahururu-Nyeri highway and ended at the Nyahururu stadium.

The Nike and Rosa Associate-sponsored race was dogged by controversies that saw it postponed on several occasions. Athletics Kenya national treasurer David Miano announced that from next year, the race will be organised under supervision of the national office in conjunction with Nyandarua and Laikipia county governments.

Piergiuseppe Picotti, a Nike representative, said the race is important for development of athletics in Nyahururu area. He promised that the race will continue being part of their agenda and urged for better organisation.
