Narok County government is in the process of constructing a stadium in Kilgoris town to honour World record-holder and Olympic Games 800m champion David Rudisha.

Narok County government has already set aside Sh17.5 million towards the construction of the facility to be named the David Rudisha Stadium. The money has already been factored in the 2015/2016 financial year budget.

According to the county government sports director Benson Kariuki, Rudisha has bought a ten-acre parcel of land in the region where the facility will be constructed.

“We have approached him (Rudisha) with a view to building the facility on a public-private partnership basis and he has shown willingness to do so,” said Kariuki.

Kariuki said he has held talks with Rudisha’s coach and plans were underway for the project.

Kariuki said the Sh17.5 million set for the stadium will go towards putting up a perimeter fence around the stadium, levelling of the grounds and construction of changing rooms and toilets. “We shall set aside a similar amount in the 2016/17 Financial Year for other developments inside the stadium. The total cost to completion will be Sh45million,” said Kariuki.

He explained that the project proposal is to have an eight-lane running track, football field, a volleyball field and basketball court.

“This will meet the needs of both the Transmara East and West sub-counties who are skilled athletes.”
