Nation Media Group (NMG) is the official media partner for this year's edition of Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon scheduled for October 30.

Standard Chartered Bank chief executive officer Lamin Majang and his NMG counterpart, Joe Muganda disclosed this on Monday at Nation Centre, Nairobi.

Muganda said he was excited to be part of the annual event, adding that he believes in the marathon’s cause, which is to reduce the cases of treatable blindness in children.

“I am excited about this partnership. This is a competition that has been going on for a while and has achieved quite a lot. This initiative was undertaken with the aim of giving back to the community. We are happy to come on board.

“We encourage Kenyans to turn up in large numbers for the event and we promise to give the organisers all the necessary support so that this year’s event is a big success,” he said, adding and that a team of 100 NMG staff will participate in the marathon.

This will be the 14th edition of the marathon, whose main aim is to raise money towards the “Seeing is Believing Campaign”, an initiative that seeks to raise funds to reduce cases of blindness in children.

DISCOURAGE CHEATING

“We have raised more than Sh150 million with the help other corporates. A total of 21,000 runners took part in the competition last year, and this year, we are targeting 30,000 this year. We have already registered 10, 000 people so far,” said Majang.

He said that stringent measures have been put in place to discourage cheating.

“We had one case of attempted fraud last year, but the culprit was caught at the finish line. This year we have come up with even more elaborate measures to ensure that only deserving winners are rewarded.

“All elite runners will be given chips that would monitor distance. Urine samples of all the winners will be taken for doping tests. The prize money would be given after the results of the doping tests have been release,” he said.

This year’s marathon will have the full 42km marathon, the half marathon, the 10km road race, the 5km fun run for children as well as the 3km leisure run for company CEOs.

Registration for the event began last week, and interested runners are encouraged to do so before tomorrow midnight.
