Patrick Muyah to take on Paul Tergat for Nock top seat

What you need to know:

  • CMD-K Secretary Irene Tindi clarified that Muyah's candidature is subject to approval by the General Assembly.

Legendary long distance runner Paul Tergat will face of Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) acting chairman Patrick Muyah for the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) presidency during the General Assembly on September 29 this year.

Tergat and Muyah were the only ones who had presented their nominations to the Centre for Multiparty Democracy-Kenya by Friday's 9am deadline.

While Tergat's nomination stood even after the aborted May 5 elections, Muyah was part of three fresh nominations that CMD-K received on Friday.

The others are Ben Ekumbo, who is due to defend his seat as first deputy president and KSF secretary Winnie Kamau, who will vie as a committee member.

Ekumbo had resigned as KSF chairman in January, a move that saw his federation that was bedevilled by wrangles, form a Transitional Committee headed by Conrad Thorpe.

SUBJECT TO APPROVAL

CMD-K Secretary Irene Tindi clarified that Muyah's candidature is subject to approval by the General Assembly.

KSF had proposed the fresh nominations with Kamau proposing Muyah. Muyah proposed both Kamau and Ekumbo.

Ekumbo will face Kenya Judo Association(KJA) president Shadrack Maluki and Kenya Jockey Union (KHU) chairman Nahashon Randiek for the first deputy president seat.

THREW IN THE TOWEL

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) chairman Waithaka Kioni and incumbent Nock president Kipchoge Keino, who had indicated that they might join the race for the presidency, failed to pick their nomination papers.

However, Kioni will take on Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei for the second deputy president position. Incumbent second deputy president Pius Ochieng will not defend his seat.

Kenya Handball Federation chairman Francis Paul will defend his position as Secretary General against Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA) president Andrew Mudibo and Kenya Rugby Union director John Kilonzo.

The deputy Secretary General position has attracted incumbent James Chacha, Kenya Weightlifting Association Secretary John Ogolla and Muriithi Nabea from Football Kenya Federation.

SHIVEKA IN THE MIX

KHU vice chairperson Elina Shiveka will take on Anne Njambi (badminton) and Eliud Kariuki (wrestling) for treasurer's position.

Incumbent Stephen Soi and Boxing Association of Kenya John Kameta will battle for deputy treasurer position.

Tindi said that officials who are vying from federations that have wrangles like Kenya Swimming Federation, Kenya Taekwondo Association, Kenya Badminton Association, Kenya Cycling Federation and Kenya Canoeing and Rowing, will have to be cleared by the General Assembly.

"Those who will have sorted out their differences will have no issues," said Tindi.

The federations had been barred from taking part in aborted May 5 election, a move that saw Taekwondo seek a High Court injunction.

Among the officials who had been barred from contesting were Soi and Chacha.
