Ronald Kwemoi wins AK meeting in Mumias

Commonwealth Games 1,500m champion Ronald Kwemoi stormed to victory in the 5,000m race at the second Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meeting at Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday.

The last 200m was a thriller, with Kwemoi and three-time world 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop going head to head.

But the world junior 1,500m record holder had the last laugh when he clocked 13 mins 48.1 secs to emerge winner as Kiprop, the 2008 Olympic 1,500m gold medallist, finished second in 13:48.4.

Kiprop and Kwemoi face off again in Nakuru where they will compete in the 800 on Friday next week.

DISTANT FIFTH

Vincent Leting came third in 13:49.9 and the 2015 Diamond League Series 3,000m winner Jairus Birech (13:52.3) was a distant fifth.

“It’s a good start, thanks to the rest for a good challenge. I want is to get my body in fine shape for the 5,000m this season,” said Kwemoi.

The 2008 world junior 5,000m bronze medallist Nelly Chebet swept to victory in the same race yesterday after clocking 16:40.2. Betty Chepkwemoi (16:50.9) and Joyce Chepkwemoi (16:56.9) were second and third, respectively.

Lemoso Kiplagat won the men’s 800m race in 1:49.2, beating Peter Kitur (1:50.9) and Geoffrey Rono (1:51.3). The 2014 World Relays 4x800m silver medallist Sylvia Chesebe triumphed in women’s two-lap race in 2:07.7 after defeating Lydia Wafula (2:08.8) and Faith Chepklen (2:09.9).

Beatrice Chepkoech (4:18.9) edged out Janet Kisa (4:19.6) in women’s 1,500m.

Joseph Phogisio reigned supreme in men’s 400m with a time of 47.4. National 400m champion Maureen Jelagat won the 400m hurdles with 61.3.
