The upgrading of Kapsabet Stadium at a cost of Sh1.2 billion is on track, Nandi Governor Cleophas Lagat has assured.

Contrary to reports that it had stalled, Lagat said the first phase of has been completed, while the second phase is underway.

The governor, however, admitted that work had delayed due to late release of cash by the National Government.

“Construction work at the 30,000-seater stadium has not been suspended,” said Lagat.

He said the contractor is back on site after the government released the money. The governor said the project would be completed before the end of the year.

SOURCE OF CHAMPIONS

“I will ensure that Nandi County remains the source of the champions. Once the stadium is complete, local and international athletes as well as schools can hire it for training,” said Lagat.

He accused critics of circulating reports that funds have been misused. Lagat said he would ensure other new stadia are built in six sub-counties.

“I cannot loot public funds meant for the renovation of the stadium, which had been neglected by previous governments since 1963, yet Nandi County has produced the highest number of athletes who have brought Kenya international recognition,” he said.

The governor directed the county Sports executive Patrick Sang, a former Olympics steeplechase silver medallist, and sports chief officer Irene Sigot to identify talent among the youth. Last week, the officials hosted some athletes from Italy.

Collaboration between Kenya and Italy to develop talent was discussed.
