World Junior 1,500 metres bronze medallist Sheila Chepng’etich and Ndakaini Half Marathon third-place finisher Emmanuel Bor on Saturday braved cold conditions to win senior titles at the AK/KCB Cross-country meeting in Iten.

The two fought off budding runners to win. On-form Chepng’etich staged a solo run in women’s 8km race to continue her good run this season, having won the season-opening Nairobi meet a fort night ago. It was not a walk in the park for the 19-year-old Form Three Student at Liloch Kipkelion Secondary School who fought off second-placed Irene Chebet to win in 25min,53.4sec, with Chebet second in 25.54.5 and Nancy Nzinza third in 26.28.3.

Former world junior champions Veronica Nyaruai settled for fourth in 26.48.2.

In the men’s 12km race, Bor won in 35.08.4, ahead of Philip Langat who finished second in 35.10.7 as Josephat Kiprop came third in 35.19.3. Bor, who easily won Moi University Cross Country race two months ago, said he started well aware of the strong opposition in the race.

“I came here prepared because I know the line-up had seasoned and budding talents. The strong opposition here was an advantage to me because it has helped me start my preparations for the next meet,” said Bor, who hopes to represent Kenya at the IAAF World Cross-country Championships in Guiyang, China next year.
