Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario believes that legendary long distance runner Paul Tergat will steer the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) and Kenyan sports to greater heights.

Wario said Tergat, who is unopposed in his quest to become Nock president, a “natural ambassador” and leader well known worldwide.

“This is great news indeed; a breath of fresh air in the Olympic sports arena. Congratulations once again to brother Paul,” said Wario, while reacting to the news that Tergat will sail through unopposed after incumbent Kipchoge Keino failed to return his nomination papers for the May 5 elections.

“Tergat comes along with youthful vigour, passion and willpower to turnaround the mystery that has been Nock over the years.”

Tergat heads into the Nock elections on May 5 as the sole candidate for the presidency after incumbent Kipchoge Keino failed to return his nomination papers.

Also expected to sail through unopposed are athletes representatives Hellen Obiri (female) and Kenya Sevens legend Humphrey Kayange (male).

Nock’s first and second deputy presidents Ben Ekumbo and Pius Ochieng will not defend their seats.

However, Centre for Multi-Party Democracy secretary Irene Tindi could not confirm whether they were among those who failed to return the nominations or were knocked out owing to technicalities.

Tindi indicated that 33 candidates collected nomination papers for various seats from which two failed to return while one nomination was rejected.
