Former champions Co-operative Bank ended their men's Kenya Basketball Federation Premier League regular season on a sour note when underdogs Kenya College of Accountancy-University shocked the bankers 48-41 at Upper Hill School on Saturday.

However, the victory had no significance to KCA-U, who are already headed for relegation after managing only four wins and 17 loses. The varsity students are placed second bottom on the 12-team standings with 25 points.

KCA-U had a bright start which saw them outscore the experienced bankers 15-3 in the first quarter as they kept pressure on their opponents to lead 20-16 at half-time.

Co-op Bank had their aggressive forward James Mwangi and shooting guard Titus Musembi working hard to erase the margin without any luck.

Even after referees David Maina and Joseph Amoko ejected KCA's Felix Omondi and Auka Awuor, the students continued to outshine the disorganised Co-op Bank.

KCA-U went down 7-8 in the third quarter but re-grouped quickly to punish the bankers 21-17 in the last quarter.

Man-of-the match Robert Simiyu and team-mate David Omondi each scored 13 points for the varsity students while James Mwangi replied with 11 for the bankers.

Co-op Bank concluded their 22 matches of the regular season with 39 points. The bankers are assured of a top four finish and a place in the eight team play-offs.

Africa Nazarene University made bright their chances of qualifying for the men's Division One League play-offs after registering a 69-61 win over fellow students Zetech University.
