National cricket team resumes training ahead of world competition

The national cricket team and members of the under-19 squad who are based in Nairobi will resume training at the Ruaraka Sports Club on Tuesday.

The senior team is preparing for the ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament set for Windhoek, Namibia, from January 17 to 24.

The event will be used as a qualifier for the World Cricket League 50-over competition and the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup starting next year running up to 2017.

The under-19 lads are sprucing up for the continental World Cup qualifiers also set for next year at a venue yet to be named by Africa Cricket Association.

Besides Nairobi, Cricket Kenya’s elite coaches, Jimmy Kamande (Mombasa) and Peter Ong’ondo (Nakuru) are working with members of the team who are not based in the capital.

The under-19 team coach, Thomas Odoyo, said on Monday the boys would train together in December after which the final 14-member squad would be named.

“We have a good blend of young and experienced senior players and we expect good results in Namibia,” Odoyo said.

The top team in the qualifier will represent Africa in the Under-19 World Cup set for Bangladesh in 2016.
