The Cricket World Cup-bound Kenya team has received a financial boost after Karuturi Global became their official shirt sponsor for the tournament and the rest of the year.

The World Cup sponsorship was unveiled on Friday at the Nairobi Gymkhana where the team held its last training session in the country before heading off to Dubai on Sundayand later to the World Cup which is being played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The deal, which is said to be running in to tens of millions of shillings, will see the team don Karuturi-branded shirts during the World Cup and during any major tournaments for the rest of the year.

Even though the money will also be spent to develop the game at all levels in the country, only the jerseys of the national men’s side will have the Karuturi logo, meaning, thereby, that Cricket Kenya is still not out of the woods as it has to seek sponsors for the women’s national side and the Under-19 side too.

Handed the Kenyan flag

At Friday’s event, the Commissioner of Sports, Gordon Oluoch, who represented the Sports Minister, handed the Kenyan flag to the skipper Jimmy Kamande.

The World Cup starts on February 19, but Kenya will play West Indies on February 12 in a warm up match in Colombo and then follow it up with another warm up match against Netherlands at Pallekele also in Sri Lanka on February 15.

Kenya starts its World Cup campaign on February 20.
