Kongonis battle to overcome Nairobi Gymkhana

What you need to know:

  • Kongonis beat Nairobi Gymkhana at the weekend by 40 runs.
  • Swamibapa’s  Obanda became the first batsman to knock double century (200) this season in a game that his team beat Cutchi Leva by 312 runs.

Kongonis must work hard to improve on their fielding technics if they are still nursing any hopes of finishing the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association Super League in a respectable position this season.

The lads dropped many catches against Nairobi Gymkhana at the weekend before winning by 40 runs.

The Nairobi Club-based team has a number of gifted players such as Eugene Ochieng, Newton Muthee, Tony Ochieng and Emmanuel Opura. So far it is only Opura who has clicked with the bat. He scored half a century, 50 runs that came off 62 balls at the weekend.

Muthee was a promising development player, who had been earmarked as a potential national team material by Mudassar Nasser, when the latter was development manager of Cricket Kenya’s predecessor, Kenya Cricket Association.

He was in charge of Kenya’s Cricket Academy, which was based at Sikh Union. Ochieng is an all-rounder. He was part of the Squad that toured Papua New Guinea in May.

Kongonis have a dependable opening batsman in Chris Childs, who knocked a scintillating unbeaten century, 104 off 153 deliveries with 10 boundaries against Gymkhana.

He remained at the crease for 50 overs. With this kind of an opener, Kongonis can go places, but only if the other batsmen will not throw away their wickets cheaply.

Kongonis has become a nursery for other teams as a number of their former players have been poached by affluent clubs that offered the boys more attractive terms. Alex Obanda, Elijah Otieno, Nelson Odhiambo and Shem Ngoche were groomed at the Nairobi Club.

Swamibapa’s  Obanda became the first batsman to knock double century (200) this season in a game that his team beat Cutchi Leva by 312 runs.

The defending league champions, Kanbis. who are vying for their 17th successive victory this season beat Ruaraka by 10 wickets and at Peponi School, Ruiru, Stray Lions beat Sikh Union by 72 runs.
