Swamibapa inched ever closer to clinching the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association Super League title when they beat Obuya Academy by 111 runs at Sir Ali Muslim Club on Sunday.

The win earned Swamibapa 16 crucial points that pushed their total on the league table to 170, narrowing the gap between them and Stray Lions (192) by 22 points. League leaders, Kanbis are four points ahead of the Lions.

“The win against Obuya Academy has given us an outside chance of clinching the title this season. It was a good come back for us after losing two successive matches. We now look forward to a more bright outings,” said Swamibapa captain Morris Ouma.

The match between the Lions and Kanbis at Peponi School was abandoned due to heavy rainfall that hit most parts of the country on Saturday that made Peponi ground unplayable. The two teams shared six points apiece.

The rainfall proved to be a blessing in disguise for Swamibapa who got 10 points more than their main opponents in the league, the Lions and Kanbis.

The overs in Swamibapa’s game were reduced from 50 to 20 and their opening batsman, Alex Obanda, did not disappoint his team, he knocked 119 runs.

Ten teams are taking part in the league, but only three are serious contenders for the title.

Eleven round of matches have so far been played with six remaining.

The game between Sikh Union (128) who were home to Cutchi Leva (63) was the only other match that took place on Sunday. All the others were called off and teams shared the spoils.

Swamibapa  are working hard to regain their lost glory. They was invincible in the 1990s when they used to dominate the NPCA league.

The team  produced the bulk of players to the national team including the three Tikolo brother; Tom, David and Steve.

The two Odumbe brothers, the late Martin Oriwo and Bernard Owino, Tariq Iqbal and his younger brother Tahir were also in the fearsome Swamibapa side of yore.

The other top player in the side were Alfred “Boi’ Njuguna, Thomas Opondo and the evergreen Sibtain Kassamali.
