Kenya’s Under-19 cricket team coach, Steve Tikolo, Friday said that local coaches need to work closer with the best players who took part in the Cricket Kenya Under-17 quadrangular tournament in Nairobi on Thursday.

Four teams took part in the tournament, two from Nairobi and one each from Nakuru and Mombasa. Nairobi ‘A’ beat the ‘B’ side by 74 runs to win the trophy. The qualifiers for the Under-19 World Cup is set for next year and the boys to represent the country in the tournament will be expected to come from among those who took part in the quadrangular tournament.

Tikolo said: “We need to work more with these boys during school holidays. The three elite coaches (Joseph Angara of Nairobi, Peter Ong’ondo of Nakuru and  Jimmy Kamande of Mombasa) will be expected to ensure that the lads play more games over the weekend. We will assemble them together during School holidays.”

Meanwhile, 20 boys and an equal number of girls picked from various primary schools in Nairobi County are being introduced to hardball game at the Ruaraka Sports Club.

The 40 players were selected at a tournament held at the Ruaraka Sports Club last month.

Angara yesterday said the youngsters will practice at the nets on one day and a game the following day. He said that way, coaches will rectify the mistakes made by the boys and girls.
