Kenya’s preparation for the sixth edition of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) Under-19 women’s championship set for Dar es Salaam from December 7 to 10, is in top gear.

The Cricket Kenya women’s Under-19 team coach Dun Okinyo on Thursday said that 65 girls, including 30 from Nakuru and 18 from the senior side, are taking part in a Twenty20 tournament for match practice that started on Wednesday and ends today at the Sir Ali Muslim Club.

“We are leaving nothing to chance this time round and we have what it takes to dethroning the defending champions Uganda,” Okinyo told Daily Nation Sport.

Okinyo has sought the assistance of Nakuru’s CK’s regional coach, Peter Ong’ondo, whose region, according to Okinyo, will also produce team captain, Quinta Auko.

HARD NUT TO CRACK

Ugandan girls have been a hard nut for Kenya to crack and past encounters between the two sides has always produced low scores.

Although girls’ cricket has taken root in both primary and secondary schools in Nairobi and Nakuru, unfortunately it has not been embraced by cricket clubs, which are the backbone of the game in the country.

The six teams that will take part in the tournament are Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Mozambique and hosts Tanzania.
