Technical University enhance chances of lifting colleges league title

Defending champions Zetech University suffered a shock 2-1 loss to National Youth Service in Universities and Colleges Football League math played on Saturday at the United States International University grounds.

Strikers Ibrahim Ng’ang’a and Joel Khayimba scored a goal each for the NYS Nairobi Holding Unit as Peter Walubengo scored the consolation goal for Zetech University.

Ng’ang’a, a seasoned striker who is currently captain for his team, notched the opener after just 17 minutes of play, disorienting the highly rated defending champions who were heavy favourites in the match.

Zetech responded fast with Walubengo levelling just three minutes later.

The 1-1 stalemate persisted until the 68th minute when Khayimba engaged in a solo run on the wings before nodding home to put his team back on the lead.

In his post-match address, a delighted Ng’ang’a said that the three points would be crucial in their bid to clinch the silverware this season, and that they will keep fighting for a win in their next games.

“We had a tough game, beating defending champions is a good motivation to our team, we hope to extend our winning ways in the subsequent matches,” he told reporters.

In another match played at the same venue, the NYS Engineering department beat Management University of Africa (MUA) 2-1 as hosts USIU cruised past Kenya Medical Training College with a 2-0 victory.

Allan Wanjiru put the engineers ahead in the 12th minute, and Hezron Mtui doubled the scores 25 minutes later. MUA’s Kevin Mokua scored the consolation goal in the 54th minute.

USIU were lifted to victory by goals from Idd Mbaraka and Anthony Mumo before former UCFL champions Technical University of Kenya took to the pitch and hit Kiamaiko City 3-1.

On Sunday, KMTC bounced back with a 2-1 win over NYS, with Javan Monda and Jeremy Ochieng’ getting into the score sheets to cancel out an earlier goal from NYS’ forward Japheth Serem.

In the other matches played at the weekend, Nairobi Institute of Business Studies beat TUK 1-0 as University of Nairobi College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences thrashed hosts USIU 3-0 courtesy of goals from Jonathan Lucho and Mike Opiyo.
