The venue for the public viewing of the Fifa World Cup trophy on November 14 has been relocated from the Moi International Sports Centre gymnasium to the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Coca Cola, who are sponsoring the tour, indicated on Friday that the change has been undertaken so as to create more room for over 10,000 fans expected to view the golden trophy.
The company’s senior franchise brand manager for Kenya, Pamela Mutua, explained that it would have complicated security details if the trophy was to be viewed at the same venue of Kenya’s World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
“The interest surrounding this event has been overwhelming hence our move to change the venue so that more consumers can attend and share this unique experience,” said Mutua at a press conference.
However, Mutua hastened to add that they will erect big screens at the stadium to enable those who will not have gone to Kasarani watch the match between Harambee Stars and Super Eagles live.
While entry into Nyayo Stadium will be free, Mutua explained that those with special tickets will be allowed ta photo opportunity with the trophy, expected to land at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on November 12 at 11am from Rwanda. Key government officials will be on hand to receive the trophy at the airport.
The trophy will on November 13 makes its way to Coca Cola Plaza in Upper Hill where members of the media, Coca Cola employees and some of Kenya’s soccer greats will have a chance to view it. Later in the day, the trophy will be presented to President Mwai Kibaki at a VIP luncheon at the Safari Park.

We need to improve our soccer standards so that at one time we may also win the trophy and have fun with it as we want. Thus, instead of watching the trophy that is on transit and is being used by a multinational company to market itself, we should throng Kasarani on 14th November and support Harambee Stars against Nigeria.
