What you need to know:

  • The players have not been paid salaries for the months of December and January.
  • They are yet to be paid winning bonuses from two matches played last season.

Financial challenges affecting AFC Leopards’ shirt sponsors Mumias Sugar have spilled over to the club, affecting preparations for the new season.

AFC Leopards deputy secretary-general, Asava Kadima, has said the club is seeking sources of additional funding to bridge the budgetary deficit and urged club members and fans to partner them in the initiative.

He said players, who have not been paid salaries for the months of December and January, are aware of financial challenges the club faces.

The players are also yet to be paid winning bonuses from two matches played last season.

“Instead of condemning us, fans should understand that our sponsors are facing financial challenges and support the team,” said Kadima.

“This is the first time since 2010 that the club has had major financial problems. The problem is not just for club officials but for all who love the team. We must all assist the team during this hard time.”

The bulk of the playing unit failed to turn up for training at the Kenya Technical Training College in Gigiri  this week as they demanded salary arrears.

Leopards fans can support the club sending money through MPesa Pay Bill number 196464.

The development comes barely a week after Leopards hired Croat Zdravko Logarusic to take over as team coach.
