AFC Leopards chairman Allan Kasavuli has decried the move by Mumias Sugar Company to suspend its sponsorship to the club.

Kasavuli said the club is already facing a serious financial crisis following a decision by the cash-strapped sugar miller to suspend its support to the 13-time Kenyan champions for the next three months.

“Things are going to be tough without a sponsor but in our short term plan, we have resorted to former international Joe Masiga to help us raise funds to meet our budget,” he said.

Kasavuli said Masiga will be in the same team with Walter Onyino, a chairmanship candidate during the club’s polls held in 2013, former club CEO Richard Ekhalie and Duncan Angode.

The chairman also appealed to the fans to rally behind the team to help them meet the Sh3 million monthly budget.

“Mumias has been sponsoring the team but now running the club’s activities will be tough without their support,” he added.

The sugar miller has been the club’s sponsors for the last four years but have suspended the deal due to financial woes facing the company.

FUNDRAISER

He said the club is planning for a major fundraiser as they continue wooing sponsors to help sustain the club.

Mumias Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director, Margret Makhungu confirmed the company is experiencing financial difficulties that had made it difficult to finance non-core functions that were previously undertaken by the firm.

“Sponsoring football is not a core function of the company. We only undertake such an exercise if the company is financially stable. For now we are reviewing our contract with AFC Leopards,” she said.
