Allan Wanga spot on as El Merreikh dump Azam in penalty shoot-out

Allan Wanga’s El Merreikh is just 90 minutes away from playing in the Cecafa-Kagame Cup finals after they edged out a stubborn Azam of Tanzania 4-3 in post match penalties in their quarter-finals match at the Nyamirambo Stadium Wednesday.

It was the third quarter-final tie to be decided by penalty shoot-outs.

Jean Baptista Mugiraneza fired APR to the semi-finals on Tuesday night with the last spot kick to hand the military side a 4-3  post match penalty victory  over local rivals Rayon Sports after a 2-2 draw  in regulation time.

In the second quarter-finals of that day Police of Rwanda stormed to the semis after edging out Burundi’s Atletico 9-8 in the penalty shoot-outs after a tempestuous battle involving the two giants ended in a barren draw in regulation time.

KCCA BEAT ATLABARA

In a late quarters kick-off Wednesday, Uganda’s KCCA earned their ticket to the semis and will meet El-Mereikh after thumping Atlabara  of Somali 3-1

Brian Majwega and Brian Umony were on target in the fourth and 32nd minute before Ssenkumba Hakim added a late third in the second half to fire their side to the last four. Oliver Paul gave Atalabra a late consolation goal.

In the El Merreikh versus Azam clash, Wanga held the nerves on the spot to cruise through after a barren deadlock in regulation time.

Playing with a heel injury, the former AFC Leopards striker was brought in late into the game as a 71st substitute for Mohamed Gabir and gave a good account of himself.

He came close with a neat effort in the 81st minute after being put through by Mohamed Ayman.

Wanga turned up in the post match penalty kicks to calmly send his effort home. The Red Devils failed to score their first kick.
