Kenyan international midfielder Anthony Akumu has joined Zambian Super League champions Zesco United on a two-year deal.

The Zambian giants agreed to personal terms with the player before he put pen-to-paper on Wednesday at the club's base in Ndola, Zambia. Akumu had a six-month contract remaining in his current deal with Al Khartoum which Zesco opted to buy out.

Speaking to Daily Nation Sport from the Ndola international airport where he was awaiting his flight back home, Akumu said that he was excited about the deal, and that he is looking forward to a good year with the Zambian club.

“This is a fresh challenge and I am looking forward to it. My friend Calabar (David Owino) has told me good things about the club and I am not worried at all about coping well with the club management," said the former Gor Mahia midfielder.

“The club management has spoken with me and they have emphasised the fact that they need to perform well in the Caf Champions League next year. That is a tough challenge, and I just hope that I will settle in fast and perform well.

“I thank everybody at Al Khartoum especially the fans and coach Kwesi Appiah who gave me the opportunity to grow to this level."

Akumu becomes the third Kenyan player to move to Zambia after Owino and former AFC Leopards striker Jacob Keli, who turns out for Nkana FC.
