Bandari, Sony into GOtv Shield quarters

What you need to know:

  • Bandari needed a last minute penalty by Noah Abich to cruise into the quarters with a 3-2 win over Nakumatt in a tension-filled but entertaining match.

It was the end of the road for top flight sides Kakamega Homeboyz, Nakumatt and Nzoia Sugar as they lost to Vihiga United, Bandari and Sony Sugar respectively in the GOtv Shield round of 16 matches played on Saturday in different venues across the country.

University side Wazito and Eldoret Youth are the only other lower tier teams that have qualified for the tournament’s last eight together with Vihiga United - who fended off Kakamega Homeboyz 4-5 on post-match penalties.

At the Mbaraki Sports Club, Bandari needed a last minute penalty by Noah Abich to cruise into the quarters with a 3-2 win over Nakumatt in a tension-filled but entertaining match.

In the ill-tempered match, Anthony Wambani shot Bandari into the lead in the 11th minute with Hassan Abdalla scoring the second in the 26th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Kepha Aswani and Boniface Akenga scored in the 29th and 56th minute for Nakumatt in what was a repeat of the 2015 final when Bandari beat Nakumatt 4-2 to at the Nyayo National stadium to win the title.

Holders Tusker also cruised into the quarterfinals of the GOtv Shield tournament after thrashing minnows Butterfly FC 4-1 at the Kinoru Stadium in Meru.

At the Kinoru Stadium, new signing David Mwangi opened the scoring for the brewers after 20 minutes before Michael Khamati added a second in the 27th minute. Dan Age halved the deficit from the spot before Brian Osumba restored Tusker’s two-goal cushion before the breather.

Paul Odhiambo completed the rout midway through the second half with a low shot from the edge of the box.

“The boys played well. It's the first time I have seen them play this kind of football. The possession, creation of chances and even scoring was on point. I think after the loss to Western Stima, the boys recollected themselves and gained courage for today's match,” said Tusker coach George Nsimbe after the match.

On Sunday, 2014 winners Sofapaka will face Kariobangi Sharks at the Nyayo Stadium in the only Shield match.

AFC Leopards’ tie against Bidco United was moved from Saturday to Wednesday next week since three of Leopards’ key players are currently on a tour of Spain with the SportPesa Premier League All Stars.
