Bandari deny champions Gor, Sofapaka shine

Stuttering champions Gor Mahia were on Sunday held to a frustrating barren draw by Bandari at Moi Stadium Kisumu, leaving their dreams for a fourth straight league title hanging by a thread.

With leaders Tusker having beating Mathare United 2-0 on Saturday, K’Ogalo needed to win to pile pressure on them. Sunday’s result leaves Gor 36 points, four points adrift from the brewers.

At Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Sofapaka emerged top in the relegation battle against Nairobi City Stars after whipping the latter 5-0, while at the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani, a Thika United and Kakamega Homeboyz battled to a  1-1 draw.

At Kasarani, home team Thika got off the blocks fast and furious with in-form Nigerian forward Chibueze Onwadi being denied by Chemelil custodian Michael Mkanyika in the fourth minute.

FIVE-GOAL ROUT

Homeboyz responded six minutes later when Andrew Murunga made a penetrating run towards goal only to fumble under pressure in the box.

The tempo continued to rise and with Homeboyz catching Thika on the break, Moses Mudavadi raced clear to tee up Andrew Murunga who completed the move by sweeping the ball into the empty net for  an opener in the 22nd minute .

Thika’s Eugene Mukangula had his fine free kick from the edge of the area thwarted by the alert Mkanyika before the determined Chibueze calmly slotted in his shot in the 32nd minute.

In Machakos, Sofapaka showed no mercy on a sorry City Stars in a five goal rout with Enock Okwil, Salim Gichuki, veteran deadball specialist Noah Abich, Moses Odhiambo and Isaac Mutanga all finding the target while Jared Obwoge scored at the death to hand Chemelil Sugar a slim 1-0 win over battling Muhoroni Youth.
