Big boys win matches, reach GOtv Shield round of 32

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia, Tusker and AFC Leopards powered their way to the round of 32 of the GOtv Shield after winning their respective matches.

Gor made light work of Mahakama Mombasa, beating them 3-0 at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

Across town at the Ruaraka Sports grounds, home side Tusker clobbered Machakos United 3-1 to sail through. Luis Misiko claimed a brace, while Mike Khamati added the other for Tusker before Kelvin Omanyo scored a late consolation for the visitors.

FILEDED SECOND-STRING SIDE

At Kasarani, Gor coach Jose Marcelo Fereirra made sweeping changes, electing to field his second-string squad which nevertheless did the job.

New signing Wellington Ochieng started at right back while Baron Oketch, a signing from Western Stima, also earned starting place but K’Ogalo were in charge playing with poise and elegance.

Abouba Sibomana, who has been a maligned figure at the club owing to lack of play time since the emergence of teenage wonder-kid, Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma, also earned his place in the team and seamlessly combined with Ochieng at right back.

It did not take long for Gor put their name on the score sheet with Sibomana scoring to put forth his case for regular football in the fourth minute while striker Jacob Keli also found the mark in the 24th and 84th minute.

SCORED A HAT-TRICK

Early on at the same venue, Kennedy Ayako stole the thunder bagging a hat-trick as his team, National Super League side Wazito FC thumped Taveta Sisal FC 5-0. Ayako’s efforts were augmented by Jeremiah Achulu’s effort and an own goal by Nashon Muyeka.

At Ruaraka, Misiko found the back of the net with a ferocious shot midway through the first half after he was set up by Shafiq Batambuze. Khamati then added a second at the stroke of half-time from a Noah Wafula cut back to ensure the brewers go for the break leading 2-0. Misiko completed his brace with a low shot in the 82nd minute before Omwayo, a second half substitute, pounced on a loose ball in the box to beat David Okello with a shot.

Leopards were however made to sweat on Friday, surviving a scare after they rallied from behind to force a 1-1 draw before prevailing 3-2 in post-match penalties against Mumbi Nationale.
