Bobby Williamson on Sunday ended his one-year tenure as head of the Gor Mahia technical bench in style as he led his team back to the top of the Kenyan Premier League table with a 1-0 win over stubborn Sony Sugar at City Stadium.

The result saw Gor players lift the Scot shoulder high at the end of the match as captain Jerim Onyango and his deputy David ‘Calabar’ Owino drenched him in water.

The fans then joined in the party and danced with him for around three minutes before security officials whisked him away to the dressing room.

This was a refreshing change as the club has not parted ways with a coach in such a joyous manner.

BEFITTING FAREWELL

“This is the best possible way I could ever wish to mark my exit. I am extremely grateful to the entire team for making my stay here a success. The fans have been fantastic and I cannot quantify just how much I will miss them,” Williamson said in his tribute to K’Ogalo which lasted 20 minutes.

After a goalless first-half, it was Geoffrey Baba Kizito who scored the solitary goal in the 58th minute when he blasted a thunderous free kick past the Sony Sugar defence of Wycliffe Nyangechi and Joseph Omweri and goalkeeper Lucas Indeche.

Sony Sugar had come with the aim of spoiling the party and played very defensively, while being speedy on the counter, with their head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno vehemently urging them to push forward.

Williamson’s side looked sluggish earlier on but took control in the fourth minute when Timothy Otieno threatened to open the score after manoeuvring though the Sony defence, buy was easily dispossessed by Marwa Chemberi.
