Brewers pump Sh37 million into Cecafa Senior Challenge

The 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge will kick off on November 24 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole, Kampala.

The tournament will run through to December 8 and all matches will be streamed live on SuperSport, Cecafa secretary-general Nicholas Musonye said on Tuesday.

He was speaking in Kampala where East African Breweries Limited - through their Tusker Lager brand - unveiled a US$450,000 (about Sh37 million) sponsorship package towards this year’s tournament.

Musonye said the package would cover the teams’ accommodation and air travel among others.

A total of US$ 60,000 (about Sh5 million) will go towards prize money with the winners taking US$30,000, (about Sh2.5 million), the runners-up US$20,000 (about Sh1.7 million) and US$ 10,000 (about Sh840,000) for the third-placed team.

Target 2014 World Cup

EABL (U) Marketing Director, Lemmy Mutahi, said his firm was happy to sponsor the tournament, adding that their ultimate aim is to catapult East African teams to the 2014 World Cup.

He revealed that as sponsors, they were happy to have the tournament hosted in Kampala.

This year’s sponsorship figure shows a 5 per cent increase compared to last year’s.

EABL also confirmed their long term engagement with Cecafa and praised the regional body for organising excellent 2010/2011 tournament in Tanzania.
