British American Investment Company (Britam) on Wednesday officially unveiled multi-million sponsorship deals with two local sports entities.

The first one is an exclusive branding rights for the Sports Kenya managed Nyayo Stadium worth Sh100m over two years.

Nation Sports earlier last week revealed that Britam had already secured the branding rights to Kenya’s second biggest sporting facility.

The financial services group has already branded the facility with their traditional blue, white and red colours, whilst other funds have been set aside to revamp the stadium’s main stand, terraces, lavaratories and dressing rooms, according to Sports Kenya’s acting Director General Gabriel Komora.

Britam has also sponsored Kenyan Premier League outfit Mathare United to the tune of Sh75 million for the next three seasons in one of the biggest shirt sponsorship deals in local football.

Britam’s corporate affairs director Muthoga Ngera said these sponsorship were in line with the institution’s policy of promoting the development of sports in Kenya.

“We picked on sports because it resonates with where we want to go through CSR (corporate social responsibility), improving the lives of our athletes and working with the Government to improve on the state of our sports facilities. I now expect Mathare United to finish in the top five (in the Kenyan Premier League) this season,” Muthoga said.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario said the Government will set aside a Sh1 billion in the next financial year to build two stadiums in Mombasa and Eldoret.

This project is part of the current Government’s pre-election pledge to construct five state of the art sports facilities in the country during its five year term.

“The Government is keen to put up world class sports facilities that will be used by our talented athletes and managed by the corporates.

“ I am keen for example, to see Harambee Stars qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations and will be meeting with the football administrators to achieve this.” Wario said.

Komora revealed a clause had been inserted in the institution’s contract with Britam, that ensures rival companies keen to use the facility are shielded from the marketing venture.

Mathare had previously been struggling financially.
