Broke Gor Mahia may pull out of Champs League

What you need to know:

  • K’Ogalo have lost two key players this season but even as the transfer window enters the third week, they haven’t secured replacements for the departed Ugandan duo of Dan Serunkuma and Geoffrey Kizito, yet they are required by the Confederation of African Football to submit their squad by January 15, 2015.
  • The local football authorities have it that in the event that K’Ogalo are unable to make it to the competitions, no other club will be considered for that position.
  • K’Ogalo require about Sh2.6 million per match in air ticket costs only, while other expenses including accommodation and local travelling costs demand an additional Sh2 million per match.

With no end in sight for Gor Mahia’s current financial quagmire, club officials are now contemplating withdrawing the team from their 2015 continental assignment.

Club treasurer Kennedy Ouma on Tuesday told Daily Nation Sport that there is a general feeling within the board that they skip the Caf Champions League if they fail to secure financial support.

“These competitions are very expensive. Last year we paid the travel agents in bits and we still haven’t cleared our bills. We may be forced to stay away next year because it is meaningless to send a depleted team to such a tournament,” he said.

EXPENSIVE VENTURE

The continental campaign is an expensive venture for any club, and in their next campaign, Gor will need approximately Sh2.5 million per match in air tickets only, while other expenses including accommodation costs could amount to an additional Sh2 million per match.

The local football authorities have it that in the event that K’Ogalo are unable to make it to the competitions, no other club will be considered for that position.

“The club is yet to put it in writing that they will not make it to the competitions but if that is the case then we will do without the competitions because the runners up (Sofapaka) will be engaged in the Confederations Cup. We are not obligated by any law to participate in the tournament,” said John Kariuki, the Football Kenya Federation media liaison officer.

The financial crisis has already began to cause frustrations in the club secretariat, with air thick with rumors that secretary general Chris Omondi has resigned. Ouma however dismissed these reports, saying that Omondi hasn’t made this communication to the Executive Council.

“What I know is that he (Omondi) was angered by certain goings-on in the club but he has not called a council meeting as require by our constitution, nor made it official to you (the press) that he has resigned so we are treating that as a rumor,” he said.
