Broke Gor could miss Caf tie against AC Leopards

What you need to know:

  • Fourteen league titles, a continental crown and several other domestic accolades, K’Ogalo has been on a renaissance in the recent past. They are back-to-back champions and have had a storming start to their chase for a third consecutive league title.
  • Sadly, these impressive performances are not mirrored in the club’s bank account that remains unhealthy. So dire is the situation that on Tuesday night, Gor called for a fundraiser at the Nairobi Club to help raise the Sh5.5 million needed to honour their Caf Champions League return leg match against AC Leopards in Congo on Sunday.
  • Gate collections – though not the solution, would have partly helped bridge the deficit, but they have no home fixture this week before a scheduled departure tomorrow for Dolisie, a small city in Congo located approximately 404 kilometres west of the capital Brazzaville.

To their boisterous fans, Gor Mahia is not just a football club, but a way of life. They pride themselves in donning the club’s green jersey. Their pride is well oiled by the fact that the club is the most decorated in this part of the world by virtue of titles won.

So dire is the situation that on Tuesday night, Gor called for a fundraiser at the Nairobi Club to help raise the Sh5.5 million needed to honour their Caf Champions League return leg match against AC Leopards in Congo on Sunday.

However, the fundraiser was a flop as a paltry Sh510,000 was raised, falling way off the target. With no shirt sponsor, times have indeed been tough for the champions. Gate collections – though not the solution, would have partly helped bridge the deficit, but they have no home fixture this week before a scheduled departure tomorrow for Dolisie, a small city in Congo located approximately 404 kilometres west of the capital Brazzaville.

In an interview with Daily Nation Sport on Thursday, Nairobi City Stars chairman Peter Jabuya, said that they would donate the proceeds from their gate collections during yesterday’s clash with Bandari to Gor to help ease the latter’s financial burden.

“It (donating the gate proceeds) is something I committed to do during the fundraiser because it flopped. I told the club to talk to their fans to turn up in large numbers for our game to raise good cash that could help them,” he explained. And speaking on Tuesday night at the function that was snubbed by top politicians, club chairman, Ambrose Rachier, admitted that they were walking a tight financial rope. “We shall be travelling with a contingent of 30 people that includes players and officials but unless we get that amount (Sh5.2million), we might fail to honour the trip and accept to face Caf’s wrath.
