Kenyan clinic will yield stars, says Southampton coach

Southampton’s Football Development Manager Danny Maye hopes his ongoing working trip in Kenya will help in unearthing the country’s next big talents.

Maye is leading a team of technical coaches attached to the English Premier League club, including Youth Development Phase coach Daniel Wright and Academy goalkeeping coach Simon James Locke for a football clinic in Kenya.

The coaches are in the country for a week-long talent identification tour of Kenya as part of the club’s partnership with sports betting firm SportPesa.

Football Kenya Federation have on their part unveiled 30 players, who will train under Maye and his colleagues at the Kenya the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi for the whole of this week.

“This is an exciting opportunity. We are here to look at the boys and impact some knowledge in them on how to play the Southampton way. At the end we hope what we say to them will help them develop into quality players and hardworking lads,” Maye said during the opening of the five-day clinic on Monday in Nairobi.

Southampton, who have a three-year partnership with SportPesa, are renowned for grooming exceptional talents, among them Arsenal trio of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers.

The team is also credited with nurturing Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale.
