LONDON

Everton are moving closer to signing Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o before the end of the current transfer window, several British media organisations, including the BBC, reported Tuesday.

The 33-year-old forward became a free agent at the end of last season following his release by Chelsea.

Everton were reported to have held talks with the former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward last week.

It was thought those discussions had broken down but the Liverpool Echo newspaper said discussions had re-started, with the Merseyside club prepared to offer Eto'o a two-year deal should he complete a medical on Tuesday.

If Eto'o does join Everton, he will become the club's fifth signing of the transfer window period following Mohamed Besic, Brendan Galloway, Christian Atsu and £28m man Romelu Lukaku.

Eto'o scored nine goals in 21 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season and has bagged more than 300 in his career.

His arrival at Goodison Park would be timely for Everton manager Roberto Martinez, still without the sidelined Arouna Kone, who remains out of action with a knee injury.

The vastly experienced Eto'o won the Champions League twice with Barcelona and again with Inter.

Everton have drawn both their opening two league games 2-2.
